I have dedicated my life to teaching ecological sanity within an insane human society where an abstract concept like money is valued more highly than life itself. I am suffering from cancer at the present time (2019) and so I speak haltingly, addressing young people with a challenge, and reminding them that they have much more power than they know. 

The weekly school strike is more important than missing a day of school. The strike is more important than going to school altogether! And since I am a teacher, that is a pretty radical thing to say. But there will be no meaningful jobs or careers, ostensibly the reason we give kids for their going to school, if the protests and strikes are not successful.  

The ancient Greek play Lysistrata tells of how the women of early Rome stopped a war between feuding tribes (the Romans and the Sabines) by refusing sex with their men until the battle was cancelled. If the young folks will emulate that strategy I believe it will work.

Nach den alarmierenden Berichten des Weltklimarats zu den Themen Klimaerhitzung, Artensterben, Eisschmelze und dramatischer Anstieg des Meeresspiegels bat mich die Tageszeitung "Die Welt" um einen Kommentar zu diesen Themen. Ich beschrieb nüchtern die neuesten Erkenntnisse der Wissenschaft. Die Zeitung fragte daraufhin ihre Leser: "Teilen Sie die Meinung des Autors?" Ergebnis: 98 Ja-Stimmen, aber 317 Nein-Stimmen.

Als ich im Januar 1993 in der ARD vor einem Millionen-Publikum zur besten Sendezeit um 20.15 Uhr die erste große Dokumentation zum Thema Klimawandel und Energiewende zeigte, hat die Welt pro Jahr um die 22 Milliarden Tonnen Treibhausgase emittiert. Jetzt, 26 Jahre und 25 Weltklimakonferenzen später, emittieren wir um die 40 Milliarden Tonnen pro Jahr. Das einzige Ergebnis: Dem Klima geht es immer schlechter. Trotz aller Diskussionen über dieses Top-Thema der Weltpolitik: Wir bewegen uns noch immer in die falsche Richtung. Weder die Politik, noch die Medien, noch die Gesellschaft, noch die Wirtschaft nehmen das Überlebensthema der Menschheit - so wie es die Klimawissenschaft inzwischen beurteilt - ernst genug.

The person yelling “we’re all gonna die” at least is exhibiting the proper level of import into changing course. Even if they may be technically incorrect about how many people will die. The person calmly responding that not everyone will die so we shouldn’t get so worried is displaying a worrying disconnect between the dire nature of the situation and their lack of urgency and focus on a solution.

Berenbaum has several suggestions. “Get rid of your lawns,” she said. “Lawns are total biological deserts. It’s just grass with pesticides. The way it’s grown does not support a lot of biodiversity.” Instead, plant native flowers that provide nectar and pollen for pollinators, Berenbaum said. Another tip: Leave leaf litter in place. Yet these emissions hit a record high in 2018. Rapid but equitable changes in energy, transportation, and other economic sectors are needed if we are even to begin to meet the requisite emissions-reduction targets. Tackling this challenge may feel overwhelming, but physicians are well placed and, we believe, morally bound to take a lead role in confronting climate change with the urgency that it demands.

The Illusion of Saving the World. At the end of this month, as you probably know by now, an extraordinary hoopla event will descend on Manhattan in the form of a “Climate Action Summit,” summoned by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, to get the nations of the world finally to take seriously the threat of “global warming” and pledge to actually take serious action to save the world from catastrophe. The chances of that happening are nil. Oh, yes there will be speeches and promises. Under increasing pressure from alarmed citizens, led by the enlightened youth of the world who know they will be the primary victims of the coming environmental disaster, most national leaders will toss around ideas like carbon taxes, bans on coal mining and nuclear energy, building “retrofitting,” renewable solar fuels, carbon dioxide entrapment, and “net zero” greenhouse gas emissions. Some will be willing to start doing something about one or another, while simultaneously asking for somebody else to pay for the astronomic costs. But the whole thing is an illusion. The problem is too big, the solutions too imperfect, and the timing, even if everything got fixed in a decade, is too late.

Every year, it expands and thickens during the fall and winter and grows smaller and thinner during the spring and summer. But in the past decades, increasing temperatures have caused marked decreases in the Arctic sea ice extents in all seasons, with particularly rapid reductions in the minimum end-of-summer ice extent. The shrinking of the Arctic sea ice cover can ultimately affect local ecosystems, global weather patterns, and the circulation of the oceans.

Arctic breakdown: what climate change in the far north means for the rest of us. In the Arctic, a summer of heat, melting and fire was rounded off by news that 2019 saw the second-lowest ever minimum extent of sea ice. That’s the point in early autumn each year when scientists say that the Arctic Ocean will begin to freeze again. By that measure, only 2012 had less sea ice than this year. Meanwhile, the IPCC’s latest special report on the oceans and cryosphere was full of bad news (the cryosphere is that part of the earth system where water occurs in its frozen form, usually as snow or ice). Zum Abschluss der internationalen Aktionswoche für mehr Klimaschutz sind weltweit erneut Millionen Menschen auf die Straße gegangen. Die größte Kundgebung gab es in Kanada. Im Beisein der schwedischen Klimaschutzaktivistin Greta Thunberg kamen in Montréal rund eine halbe Million Menschen zusammen. Darunter war auch Kanadas Premierminister Justin Trudeau. In Europa versammelten sich die meisten Menschen in Italien. Es gab laut der Klimaschutzbewegung "Fridays for Future" Großdemonstrationen mit mehr als 150.000 beziehungsweise mehr als 200.000 Teilnehmern in Mailand und Rom.

Im Kampf gegen die Klimakrise beruft sich die Aktivistin Greta Thunberg jetzt auf die UN-Kinderrechtskonvention. Zusammen mit anderen Jugendlichen legt sie eine Beschwerde gegen Deutschland und vier weitere Länder vor.

Er vertritt 16 Kinder und Jugendliche zwischen 8 und 16 Jahren vor dem Kinderrechtsausschuss der UNO gegen Deutschland, Frankreich, Argentinien, Brasilien und die Türkei, weil sie zu wenig gegen den Klimawandel tun. Er sieht die Regierungen in der Pflicht und unterstützt die Schüler in der Forderung Klimaschutz im Namen der Kinderrechte zu fördern und das Recht der Kinder auf ein lebenserhaltendes Klima zu gewährleisten.

Climate Change Protesters Shut Down Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood. During a climate change protest on Monday, a group of activists blocked traffic, effectively shutting down a major Hollywood intersection. According to ABC 7, the demonstrators forced Sunset Boulevard to be closed down at Cahuenga “as part of a planned event for the socio-political group Extinction Rebellion.” The Los Angeles Police Department reported to the scene, and deemed it a peaceful protest. No arrests were made although the protest was reportedly not permitted.

Human Rights Commission, seeking to hold polluters accountable for the human rights violations arising from the climate crisis. They also want to countries like the Philippines, one of those considered most vulnerable to climate change impacts, to fight harder for justice from richer, more polluting countries.

At the UN, losing the race against time to fight climate change. World leaders gathered on Sept. 23 to address the climate crisis, but activists say they still aren’t doing enough. Although nearly 70 countries committed themselves to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, aside from the European Union most were relatively small and largely incidental to the global economy. The urgency of the summit was underscored by leaked details of a U.N. report set to be released this week, which suggests sea ice is melting much faster than expected and that irreversible tipping points have already been reached.

Ich hatte schon befürchtet man würde mir Autos mit über 300 PS verbieten und "oh Schreck" ein Tempolimit einführen.

Ich dachte die schönen, bunten Plastiksachen aus Billiglohnländern, die mit Schweröltankern aus Asien zu uns kommen und die nach dem 1. Benutzen im Müll landen, würden einfach verboten.

Und diese ganzen trickreichen Verpackungen um Verpackungen in Verpackungen von Verpackungen wären plötzlich weg...

Und ich hätte plötzlich nicht mehr 20 Meter Fleischtheke bei Lidl vorgefunden, sondern nur noch 5 Meter echt teures Fleisch, weil Massentierhaltung einfach so verboten worden wär.

Oder nur noch die Post brächte Pakete und Briefe, statt der 5 oder 6 Kleinbusse aller möglichen Anbieter, die jeden Tag unsere Siedlungen besuchen.

Und was ich mir alles ausgemalt habe, wie man die Industrie mit Gesetzen zu Nachhaltigkeit zwingt...

Ich dachte nach dem Klimagipfel kommt es knüppelhart für uns und jetzt wird alles gut für nur 1,50 Euro. Ich geh auch wirklich häufiger tanken dann - fürs Klima - versprochen!

As many as 4 million people around the world took to the streets Friday in the largest day of action focused on the climate crisis. Students across the globe led climate strikes in hundreds of countries, inspired by 16-year-old Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg. The demonstration kicked off in Foley Square, where tens of thousands of people gathered before the march. Varshini Prakash, co-founder and executive director of the Sunrise Movement, and climate activist Vic Barrett were among the handful of activists who addressed the climate strikers in Foley Square.

It’s Monday, September 23, and Greta Thunberg and 15 other kids brought the hammer of justice to the U.N.

In a scorching speech to international leaders today at the opening of the U.N.’s Climate Action Summit, 16-year-old activist Greta Thunberg reminded the audience what the stakes are for the world. “People are suffering, people are dying, and entire ecosystems are collapsing,” she said. When the Swedish teen had finished her speech, one could argue the adults arrayed in front of her were the group of animals most at risk of extinction. “This is all wrong — I shouldn’t be up here, I should be back in school on the other side of the ocean,” she said. “You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words.” Thunberg wielded more than powerful rhetoric in her battle against recalcitrant nations. She is one of the organizing members of a legal complaint filed today against five countries that the suit alleges have moved too slowly to combat climate change. The formal complaint, brought to the U.N. by a group of 16 kids between the ages of eight and 17, is a first-of-its-kind effort to make world leaders take action. The five nations in question — Argentina, Brazil, France, Germany, and Turkey — have ratified an international treaty that states that those countries have a duty to protect children. (The U.S. has not ratified this particular treaty.) The young people’s petition argues that intensifying climate change is evidence that those countries have neglected that duty. The petition comes after more than 700 young people from around the world gathered at U.N. headquarters in New York City for the first-ever Youth Climate Summit on Saturday. They asked leaders to fund climate resilience and adaptation in poorer nations and to stop burning fossil fuels. They also brainstormed new ways to stop climate change and mitigate its worst effects. “We showed that we are united and that we, young people, are unstoppable,” Thunberg said at the youth summit.

They certainly aren’t showing any signs of slowing down.

Die Umfrage wurde online durchgeführt, ihre Repräsentativität ist zweifelhaft, vor allem, wie YouGov selbst anmerkt, in China, Thailand, Vietnam, Ägypten, Indien und Indonesien, wo weniger als 60 Prozent der Bevölkerung einen Internetzugang besitzt.

A major new project from The Nation and the Columbia Journalism Review hopes to improve global coverage of the climate crisis, with more than 250 media outlets around the world — including Democracy Now! — signing on to the effort to publish or broadcast stories on climate. Organizers say this is one of the most ambitious efforts ever to organize the world’s media around a single topic. The week of coverage, which leads up to next week’s U.N. Climate Action Summit, kicked off on Sunday. As part of the effort, CBS News released a new poll of over 2,000 U.S. residents that measured attitudes around climate change, which found that two-thirds of Americans believe climate change is either a crisis or a serious problem, and a majority want immediate action to address the Earth’s temperature rise. In San Francisco, we speak with Mark Hertsgaard, one of the co-founders of the project, called Covering Climate Now, and The Nation’s environment correspondent and investigative editor.

‘Never give up’: Greta Thunberg takes climate strike to the White House

We interviewed two women, both from Wales – Melanie Edwards, 41, a carer, and Victoria Bamford, 71, a gardener. They had travelled to Heathrow (Melanie cycled over several days) to take part in the Heathrow Pause protest against airport expansion. Over the previous days, alleged organisers were arrested and homes raided, and despite safety assurances from the protest group (who intended to openly fly toy drones with the prohibited area around Heathrow but at head height and well away from flight paths) there were headlines about eco-terrorism and a statement from police vowing a major operation. The group had met with both airport authorities and police prior to the protests and they were given a dedicated police phone number to communicate, but after flying their drones in Sipson Rec, within a quarter of a mile of the airport perimeter, the women phoned and were met with an answer message. They gave their location but no police operation ensued, so they walked the mile along Bath Road, openly carrying their drones, until finally giving themselves in at the Heathrow Polar Police Station. They had spent an hour doing exactly what the protest group had always said they would do, and which led to the raids, arrests, and even the imprisonment of Roger Hallam (co-founder of Extinction Rebellion and spokesperson for the Heathrow Pause group) who is remanded until a court hearing on October 14th. Aside from the perverse policing, this film is about the sacrifice and heart of these two people, who are deeply concerned about the future and have tried all the usual ways to protest against airport expansion. As Melanie puts it “it can’t be put in the hands of politicians who will declare a climate emergency and then a couple of weeks later back the expansion of this monstrosity (Heathrow) – it goes against all logic.” A Heathrow Pause spokesperson issued this statement:

“We must reiterate that interrupting the Airport and disturbing scores of travellers was never the ultimate goal of this action. The real objective was always to trigger a sensible, honest conversation throughout society on the dangerous folly of Heathrow expansion, with the ultimate objective of cancelling the third runway. That conversation is now happening. It is incumbent on all of us to keep it going.”

Klimaforscher fordert dauerhaft steigenden CO2-Preis. Der CO2-Preis sei in der Klimapolitik die entscheidende Maßnahme, sagte der Wissenschaftler vom Potsdam-Institut für Klimafolgenforschung im Deutschlandfunk. Nur wenn dieser dauerhaft steige, würden sich der Konsum und die Investitionsentscheidungen danach ausrichten. Ob der Preis über eine CO2-Steuer oder einen Zertifikatehandel eingeführt werde, sei weniger wichtig. Entscheidend sei, dass die Politik den Menschen erkläre, was mit dem Geld passiert. Nur dann gebe es auch eine Akzeptanz für die Maßnahmen. Wenn die Leute dagegen den Eindruck hätten, dass der Klimaschutz auf Schröpfen und Gängeln hinauslaufe, würden sie auch nicht mitmachen, sagte Edenhofer. Deshalb brauche es gleichzeitig Entlastungen für Haushalte mit geringem Einkommen, zum Beispiel mit einer Senkung der Stromsteuer.

In her first extended broadcast interview in the United States, we spend the hour with Greta Thunberg, the 16-year-old Swedish climate activist who has inspired millions across the globe. Last year she launched a school strike for the climate, skipping school every Friday to stand in front of the Swedish parliament, demanding action to prevent catastrophic climate change. Her protest spread, quickly going global. Hundreds of thousands of schoolchildren around the globe have participated in their own local school strikes for the climate. Since her strike began in 2018, Greta has become a leading figure in the climate justice movement. She has joined protests across Europe. She has addressed world leaders at the U.N. climate talks in Poland and the European Union Parliament. She has even met the pope. And now she is in New York to join a global climate strike on September 20 and address the U.N. Climate Action Summit on September 23. Greta has refused to fly for years because of emissions, so she arrived here after a two-week transatlantic voyage aboard a zero-emissions racing yacht. She is also planning to attend the U.N. climate summit in Santiago, Chile, in December. Greta joined us Tuesday in our Democracy Now! studio.

This talk by Dr. Susanne Moser, presented on June 12, 2015, takes a look at climate and hope different than usually. The word has a diverse meaning and integral relationship with the human psyche. To 'abandon all hope' we risk painting ourselves into a dark, dark corner when in fact we need to be coming from the light more now than ever. Hope is more complex than that. There is no doubt we live at an apocalyptic moment in time. Remaining intent upon making personal and political change within our sphere is a self-reinforcing function coupled with hope. We cannot afford to bar 'hope' as one of the many responses upon which we can draw.

But two world wars, genocides, the Bomb and untold suffering around the globe reported daily have all perhaps dulled our senses and our resolve; resulted in elders – especially our leaders – failing to face humanity’s ultimate existential crisis. More than 30 years after the Climate Emergency was publicly declared by climatologist James Hansen, disasters multiply – record heat, drought, deluge, rising seas. But climate change deniers hold sway in the U.S. and abroad, with almost no nations on Earth on target to achieve their deeply inadequate Paris Agreement goals. Now an even higher imperative has emerged, as new studies point not just to escalating risk, but toward potential doom. Understandingly, young people are angry and openly rebelling against their elders. The young point to a failure to act, and declare: there is no time for politics and business as usual. They’re right. Humanity’s only way out – the path to saving civilization, and much of life on Earth – is to act as though our lives, and our children’s lives, depend on it. Because they do. Schwere Unwetter mit sintflutartigen Regenfällen haben im Südosten Spaniens drei Todesopfer gefordert. Medienberichten zufolge starb ein älteres Ehepaar in Alicante, das in seinem Auto von den Fluten mitgerissen wurde. In Almeria ertrank ein Mann in seinem Fahrzeug. Der Sturm, der Anfang der Woche über die Balearen hinweggezogen war, erreichte in der Nacht zum Donnerstag das Festland und verursachte in mehreren Gebieten Überschwemmungen. Besonders heftig traf es dabei Ontinyent, südlich von Valencia. Dort fielen nach Angaben des spanischen Wetterdienstes innerhalb von 24 Stunden fast 300 Liter Regen pro Quadratmeter. Es soll sich um das schlimmste Unwetter in der Region seit dem Beginn der Wetteraufzeichnungen handeln.

The government agency that manages Australia's Great Barrier Reef on Friday downgraded its outlook for the condition of the coral system from "poor" to "very poor." The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority's (GBRMPA) report blamed climate change for coral bleaching, which occurs as a result of rising sea temperatures. "Significant global action to address climate change is critical to slowing the deterioration of the reef's ecosystem and heritage values and supporting recovery," said the five-year review of the world's largest coral reef system.

To the extent that retreat is already happening, it is typically ad hoc and focused on risk reduction in isolation from broader societal goals. It is also frequently inequitable and often ignores the communities left behind or those receiving people who retreat. Retreat has been seen largely as a last resort, a failure to adapt, or a one-time emergency action; thus, little research has focused on retreat, leaving practitioners with little guidance. Such a narrow conception of retreat has limited decision-makers' perception of the tools available and stilted innovation.

Schon seit rund zwei Wochen brennen gewaltige Flächen des tropischen Regenwaldes im Amazonasbecken und an den Grenzen zu Paraguay. Begünstigt werden die Brände von einer Dürre und einer durch durch jahrzehntelangen Raubbau bedingten Schwächung des Waldes. Doch verursacht wurden sie offenbar durch Brandstiftung, durch eine konzertierte Aktion von Rinderzüchtern, die, ermutigt von einem rechtsradikalen, Völkermord gutheißenden Präsidenten, ein Zeichen setzen wollen:

Worlwide Water Crisis: Water Is Inaccessible and Unaffordable in Developing Megapoles Around the World. Developing economies across Asia, Africa and South America, known as the Global South, are steadily running out of drinking water.

And accessing what is available is blowing a major hole in household budgets, a study across 15 cities has revealed. Thousands of birds killed after freak weather event leaves them with smashed skulls and internal damage. Baseball-sized hailstones and 70mph winds have been blamed for the deaths of thousands of birds at a lake in Montana. More than 11,000 wetland birds and waterfowl were killed or seriously injured by a hailstorm that also caused widespread damage to homes and farms in the Billings area, authorities said. The animals at Big Lake suffered “massive blunt-force trauma” and many of those that were not killed sustained broken wings and flight feathers, according to Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) officials.

Auf einem Flugplatz in Bottrop-Kirchhellen zum Beispiel versammeln sich an einem Augustwochenende die Autofans. Lange haben sie an ihren Autos geschraubt, um sie zu Höchstleistungen zu bringen. Und in einem Viertelmeilenrennen der Schnellste zu sein. CO2-Ausstoß, Klimaschäden, Ende des Individualverkehrs – kein Thema unter „Tunern“. Und die schwedische Klimaaktivistin Greta Thunberg keine Gallions-, sondern eher eine Hassfigur für sie. Auch Andere, politisch Aktive und Engagierte – wie die Jungen Liberalen oder die Gewerkschaftern der IG-Metall-Jugend – haben eine kritische Position zum radikalen Gesellschaftswandel, den Fridays for Future fordern. An der Frage der Klimapolitik entlang diskutieren die Jugendlichen ihre Vision von der Welt, in der sie leben wollen. Und entwickeln ihre Vision von der Gesellschaft, die sie prägen wollen. Von einem Konsens oder einer gemeinsamen Sicht darauf sind sie dabei noch weit entfernt.

Nur: Getan haben sie nichts oder nicht genug. Ihre eigenen Klimaschutzziele haben sie krachend verfehlt. Ihr eigenes Erneuerbares-Energie-Gesetz haben sie so verwässert und verbürokratisiert, dass in den letzten Jahren der Ausbau der Solarenergie ausgebremst wurde und der Ausbau der Windenergie 2019 nahezu zum Erliegen kam. Jetzt aber muss Schluss sein mit immer mehr bürokratischen Hürden für die Erneuerbaren und Schluss mit schieren Ankündigungen.

Schon 2007 hat Angela Merkel gesagt: "Die Klimakrise ist die Überlebensfrage der Menschheit." Bereits als Umweltministerin hat sie 1995 eine Kerosin-Steuer auf Flugbenzin und eine europäische CO2-Steuer gefordert. Jetzt - 24 Jahre später - sollten endlich Taten folgen.

Diese Frist lassen wir gerade verstreichen. Auch das Ziel des Pariser Klimaabkommens, mit einer Erderwärmung von maximal 1,5 Grad bis zum Ende dieses Jahrhunderts das Schlimmste zu verhindern, ist in weite Ferne gerückt. Das weltweite Artensterben ist derweil soweit fortgeschritten, dass Forscher*innen teilweise vom sechsten Massensterben in der Geschichte des Planeten sprechen. Gleichzeitig haben die Schüler*innenstreiks von Fridays for Future und die weltweiten Blockade-Aktionen von Extinction Rebellion das Thema Klimawandel wieder in das öffentliche Bewusstsein gerückt – als die wohl fundamentalste Aufgabe der Menschheit, die alle entscheidenden Themen wie Ressourcenkampf, Klimaflucht und Migration, Zusammenbruch von Gesellschaften und die Zukunft des Planeten berührt.

Schon gar nicht, wenn auf das eine oder andere etwas gründlicher eingegangen werden soll. Wie grün die Grünen eigentlich noch sind. Man solle doch einfach mal ihr Programm lesen. Aber eigentlich reicht schon ein Blick auf die Bilanz des ersten grünen Ministerpräsidenten in Baden-Württemberg, wo die Bahn weiter Steuergelder in 100-Millionen-Euro-Bündeln für einen dysfunktionalen Stuttgarter Tiefbahnhof verbrennt, wo noch immer keine Windkraftanlagen gebaut werden und wo die Landesregierung ganz wie im benachbarten Bayern verklagt werden muss, weil sie nichts gegen die zu hohe Stickoxidbelastung unternimmt.

Unter den vermeintlichen "Argumenten" gegen die Dringlichkeit der Ergreifung hinreichend geeigneter Maßnahmen gegen die Folgen eines menschengemachten Klimawandels und damit mittelbar gegen eine forcierte Energiewende taucht in der Debatte früher oder später beinahe so sicher wie das Amen in der Kirche ein Pseudoargument auf: "Klimawandel gab es schon immer ..." Im Grunde ist das ein Rückzugspseudoargument, welches indirekt eingesteht, was vor noch nicht allzu langer Zeit glattweg geleugnet wurde: Dass sich aktuell das Klima erwärmt. Dieser Standpunkt ist heutzutage angesichts der immer klareren Daten- und Faktenlage nur noch vereinzelt anzutreffen. Man will sich nicht mehr mit einer offenkundig kontrafaktischen Haltung lächerlich machen.

Exponential as a mathematical concept is fully understandable. Global dimming is a fact. The baseline is 1750, not 1850 and we are easily past 1.5 C and already very near 2.0; actually 4.0 in the Arctic where it really matters. There are known temperature numbers for decline and failure of agriculture which we are now flirting with. The world population continues to grow as does the use of fossil fuels. The 6th mass extinction is factually underway. Literally nothing of a meaningful nature was done 40 years ago when it mattered and nothing is being done or will be done even now when it is too late. Greenland Lost 12.5 Billion Tons of Ice in a Single Day. The amount of ice collectively lost last Wednesday and Thursday would be enough to cover Florida in almost five inches of water  Last Thursday, August 1, the Greenland ice sheet experienced its largest single-day volume loss on record, sending an estimated 12.5 billion tons of ice pouring into the ocean. Per a Twitter post by climate scientist Martin Stendel, the amount of ice collectively lost on Thursday and Wednesday—the ice sheet’s biggest surface melt day since 2012, with around 60 percent of the frozen expanse undergoing at least 1 millimeter of melting—would be enough to cover Florida in almost five inches of water.

Temperaturen von über 40 Grad waren in Deutschland bisher eine Seltenheit, stellt der Deutsche Wetterdienst klar: "Von 1881 bis 2018 wurden in Deutschland insgesamt 10 Mal 40 Grad erreicht oder überschritten, jetzt im Juli 2019 25 Mal in nur 3 Tagen!"

The most important event on the planet right now? Arctic Climate Chaos. 

The state of affairs: 

1. Arctic Sea Ice is currently at record lows in the Northern Hemisphere and at or near record lows within the Arctic Basin itself.

2. The Greenland Ice Sheet is forecast to lose 40 gigatonnes of ice in a matter of days

3. The fires in the Arctic are reaching apocalyptic levels.

4. Large emissions of methane gas appear to be venting from the Arctic Basin.

5. The conditions favorable for extensive melting of sea ice, Greenland ice and the production of further large fires (namely, very abnormal heat and drying of vegetation/peat) will continue over Greenland, much of Alaska and Central Siberia for at least the next two weeks. No station in the state of Alaska has been below freezing for more than a month. Further sea ice losses and abnormal heating will further drive jet stream wave anomalies and extremes (storms and heat waves) in the Northern Hemisphere.

This is such a perfect metaphor for our times. Apparently intelligent people pursue all manner of, frankly insane, ballot measures while the world goes down in flames. We sell gas and oil leases like there's no tomorrow and then ban plastic bags. We have the 4th largest number of cattle in the U.S. and then offer one vegan option on school lunch menus to "help combat climate change." This is some serious biblical level crazy. While I am no longer appalled by these pointless efforts I am still in awe of, what I call, next-gen deniers. Der Mensch kann sich um sich selbst kümmern, um seine Familie, seine Freunde, vielleicht sein Land. Um seinen Planeten offenbar nicht. Der Klimawandel ist zu groß für unsere Wahrnehmung. Er ist keine plötzliche Gefahr, die über uns hereinfällt, sondern eine schleichende, die wir seit Jahrzehnten kennen. Er ist kein konkretes, singuläres Ereignis, sondern eine Verkettung dynamischer Prozesse. Er bedeutet nicht nur Feuersbrünste, Überflutungen, Missernten, Klimaflucht; all die Horrorszenarien, über die wir in den Medien lesen. Er bedeutet auch das schöne Wetter vor dem Fenster. "Das Schöne zeigt sich unmittelbar und individuell, das Falsche liegt im System", schreibt die amerikanische Künstlerin Roni Horn über die Paradoxie unserer Zeit. In seinem Buch Kampf um Gaia fasst der französische Soziologe Bruno Latour diese Lähmung des reichsten, von den Folgen des Klimawandels am wenigsten betroffenen Teils der Menschheit im Vorsorgeparadox zusammen: Ihr Kind hat einen Schnupfen oder Ihr Auto macht ein verdächtiges Geräusch. Aus Erfahrung wissen Sie, dass es so schlimm nicht werden wird, zum Arzt oder Automechaniker gehen Sie aber doch. Einem unwahrscheinlichen Schaden vorzubeugen ist das Wesen der Vorsorge. Beim Klimawandel verhält es sich genau andersherum: Jahr für Jahr verwandeln sich Prognosen in Tatsachen. Wenn es noch einen neuen Spin zur Erderwärmung gibt, dann immer nur den, dass alles noch schneller abläuft als befürchtet. Die Eisflächen schwinden dramatischer, der Meeresspiegel steigt früher als angenommen. Des Schadens können wir uns sicher sein – die Maßnahmen, ihn zu begrenzen, treffen wir nicht.

Der Weltklimarat (IPCC) berät in Genf: Dabei geht es unter anderem um einen Sonderbericht zu den Wechselwirkungen zwischen Klimawandel und Landnutzung. Beide sind eng miteinander verflochten: Auf der einen Seite sind Land- und Forstwirtschaft Teil der Ursachen für den Klimawandel. Auf der anderen verstärkt der Klimawandel den Druck auf die ohnehin belasteten Landökosysteme und -ressourcen. Daraus folgen hohe Risiken für Ernährungssicherheit, Wasserversorgung und biologische Vielfalt und damit für die Existenzgrundlage der Menschheit.

Etwa ein Viertel der klimaschädlichen Emissionen von Treibhausgasen stammt aus Landwirtschaft, Forstwirtschaft und anderer Landnutzung. Kühe zum Beispiel tragen erheblich dazu bei, denn sie stoßen Methan aus - ein Gas, das sich noch schlechter auf das Klima auswirkt als Kohlendioxid. 

Der Sonderbericht soll die Probleme, aber auch Lösungswege aufzeigen. 

Dem 1988 gegründeten Weltklimarat gehören 195 Staaten an, die jeweils Experten entsenden, um neueste Erkenntnisse zum Klimawandel zusammenzutragen und politische Entscheidungsträger darüber zu informieren.

Schulstreik: Drohungen von Politikern, die ihre Pflichten nicht erfüllen. Preußelnde Schwaben drohen den Schülern, doch die erinnern die alternden Politiker an ihre Unterlassungen. 

Mancherorts, wie in Berlin, gehen inzwischen die Ferien zu Ende. Für manchen Politiker ist das offensichtlich Grund, mehr Druck auf die dauerprotestierenden Schüler auszuüben. Baden-Württembergs christdemokratische Kultusministerin Susann Eisenmann warnt zum Beispiel, dass die Schüler lernen müssten, mit den Folgen ihres Streiks zu leben. Wenn Arbeiten nicht nachgeschrieben würden, könne es schon mal Sechsen geben.

Und natürlich durfte auch der urdeutscheste aller Untertanensprüche nicht fehlen: Die Schüler sollten lernen, dass sie Rechte haben. Aber eben nicht nur diese, sondern auch Pflichten. Für CDU-Politiker scheint es eben einfach nicht möglich, von demokratischen Rechten zu reden, ohne im gleichen Atemzug Pflichten zu beschwören. Vielleicht sollten Sie einfach mal einen Blick in das Grundgesetz werfen?

Nach mehreren Auto-Gipfeln lädt jetzt die Bundesregierung zu einem "Krisen-Gipfel für den Wald" und zu einem "Windkraft-Gipfel" ein. Alle Gipfel demonstrieren das eklatante Versagen der Großen Koalition beim Umweltschutz. Drei CSU-Verkehrsminister auf Bundesebene haben die deutsche Verkehrspolitik zu einer schieren Autopolitik verkommen lassen. Zusammen mit den deutschen Autobauern haben die letzten Bundesregierungen die Elektromobilität der Zukunft komplett verschlafen. China, Japan, Südkorea, Kalifornien, aber auch Frankreich, die Niederlande und Norwegen sind uns in der E-Mobilität weit voraus. Nur ein Beispiel: In der südchinesischen Millionenstadt Shenzen fahren ausschließlich Elektro-Taxen - und zwar 22.000 - und ausschließlich E-Busse - und zwar 16.500. Undenkbar in einer heutigen deutschen Millionenstadt.

Flooding causes major disruption across north of England. Roads have been closed, rail services cancelled and homes flooded as severe downpours affect large areas of the north of England. A day of heavy rain has led to 16 flood warnings across the North West, the North East, Yorkshire and the Midlands. Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service has declared a major incident amid widespread problems in Poynton. Vehicles were left trapped in the town, and a nursery, several homes and a farm were also swamped.

England Region to Place UN Accredited Climate Crisis Teacher in Every State School. The newly elected mayor of England's northernmost region wants to put a UN-accredited climate change teacher in every state funded primary and secondary school, making his region the first in the world to do so, as the London Economic reported. Jamie Driscoll, a Labour-party politician, declared a climate emergency on his first day in office after he was elected to be the first mayor of the North of Tyne Combined Authority in May. Since then has pushed to make sure environmental education is taught at every school in his region, which includes Northumberland, Newcastle and North Tyneside in the northeastern corner of the country.
